An eclectic array of juxtaposed shapes and patterns intermingle in a finite
space. They cluster. They merge, intertwine, and divide. Amidst the density and
jumble of form are glimpses of a lighter, lacy spaciousness. There is a
suggestion of exuberance, surprise, and limitless possibility.
Developing the formal vocabulary for Meta Mixaphors involved a time intensive
process that looped between drawing, painting, silkscreen design, and computer manipulation. The imagery includes forms such as Voronoi triangles, prayer mandalas and vintage typography. Hundreds of hand cut stencils, etching plates, and other elements were produced in preparation for the printing process. Composing the prints was a process both highly strategized and completely dependent on improvisation. The creation process was surrendered, ultimately, to the physics of the etching press. Transiting through the press, the design transforms in unpredictable ways with unlimited possibilities of outcome. Shapes congeal together, are obscured, revealed, obliterated. The result is an abstract event of its own making. The monoprints in this series look convincingly like collage but, in actuality, they have no separate parts. They are one continuous surface forged by the press.
