Each print in the series Meta Mixaphor is an experiment in surrendering my own design control to the mechanics of the etching press. Dozens (in some cases, hundreds) of separately prepared etching plates, inked stencils, and watercolor transfers are assembled onto a piece of paper and rolled through the press in two runs, resulting in many diverse elements becoming one intricate unified image that evidences the chance and randomness of its own creation. The visual vocabulary is based on charts, icons, models and other tools of inquiry associated with a range of divergent systems of knowledge, including the natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, data analysis and contemplative practice.
